Course Objectives

This aim of this course is to enable graduates to be ready for employment within a legal or quasi-legal environment.

The course is directed in such a way that graduates will be ready for employment having gained knowledge of the areas of law, legal procedures, definitions and terminology relating to those areas of law, typing and word processing and production of legal documentation and related correspondence.

As part of the course, graduates will develop:

  • a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Word 2003 within a legal office environment
  • the ability to produce legal correspondence and legal documentation including the use of a precedent package such as LawPerfect
  • dictaphone typing
  • copy typing
  • an understanding of a legal office environment
  • an understanding of their role within the legal office environment including what is expected by employers such as the partners, solicitors and human resources departments.

To achieve optimum results, Jobs and Training's course also includes interview techniques and resume preparation to ensure our graduates are "job ready" and able to secure a position within a legal or quasi-legal environment.

Course Duration

This course runs over a 15 week period, Wednesday to Friday from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Course Pre-Requisites

Entry pre-requisites include the following competencies:

  • ability to read, comprehend and discuss information in English
  • ability to participate in small, informal groups
  • ability to use and analyse simple data, relation and pattern, number, measurement and shape
  • typing skills

Job Placement

Jobs and Training's Human Resources Division offers a placement service for graduates of the course. The placement service is free of charge to its graduates.

Comprehensive Course Notes

Comprehensive course notes are provided during the course covering all theory aspects of the course.

Certificates

All graduates, on completion of the course including assessment of assignments and passing of the exams, will be presented with a Certificate IV in Business (Legal Services).

Students who do not complete the course are able to be provided with a Statement of Achievement of completed assessed modules.

Portfolio

All students will have a complete portfolio of work produced during the course to keep. It will contain work relating to the areas of law and the administration involved within a legal environment. Students who wish to have samples of their word processing work must supply a USB drive for this.

  • BSBLEG301A - Apply knowledge of legal system to complete tasks
  • BSBLEG409A - Provide non-legal advice
  • BSBLEG302A - Carry out search of a public record
  • BSBLEG304A - Apply the principles of confidentiality and security within the legal environment
  • BSBLEG305A - Use legal terminology in order to carry out tasks
  • BSBLEG306A - Maintain records for time and disbursements in a legal practice
  • BSBLEG403A - Maintain trust accounts
  • BSBLEG401A - Prepare and produce complex legal documents
  • BSBRES403A - Research legal processes
  • BSBLEG410A - Interact with other parties
  • BSBRES402A - Research, locate and provide legal and other information in response to requests
  • BSBLEG405A - Provide support in family law matters
  • BSBLEG404A - Provide support in property law matters
  • BSBLEG407A - Provide support in commercial law matters
  • BSBLEG406A - Provide support in criminal law matters
  • BSBLEG412A - Interpret and apply legislation

Recognition of Prior Learning / Current Competence (RPL/RCC)

For those with current experience, but no formal qualifications an RPL/RCC process can be undertaken. This involves the provision of evidence guides for candidates to complete and the assessment of a portfolio of evidence.

Youth Allowance/Abstudy/Austudy

This course is approved for Youth Allowance, Abstudy and Austudy. Students may apply for these allowances.
